"The Point", Broadway to the right, Canisteo St. to the left!

A viewer from the Rochester area sent in these old photos that were simply marked "Hornell". No year or details.

A quiet neighborhood!

A "fair" of some kind!

A regular contributor, George Wachter, class of 50, provided the following series of Hornell pictures he salvaged from an old calendar. Regretfully, George wasn't able to scan 3 of the calendar's pages due to damage.

Details regarding the building of the old Hornell High School. Not sure where this piece of information came from but it is interesting!

Here is a piece of historical information I wasn't aware of. . . the above photo is of a grade school class in Rowleyville, New York, 1914. For those of you, like me, with no recognition of Rowleyville, it's now known as South Canisteo. Below is the excerpt from an email sent by Linda Cornish, who's Grandfather is pictured above.

Here is a picture of the Rowleyville District # 10 School in 1914. My grandfather is on the bottom row, James Cornish and it states on the back that the teacher is Margaret Brotzman. We were wondering if anyone would recognize any of the other students?

Anyone with information regarding the identity of others in the photo can contact us at hornellhome@aol.com!

Submitted by Neil Ferguson, above is his dad, Mark Ferguson (in 1926), up on a "gas storage tank" that once sat just above the old Erie underpass on Canisteo Street. For those not remembering the underpass, the large "gas tank" sat where the Comfort Inn motel now sits, a block or so North of the VFW. Notice in the background the Erie yards and the buildings on Loder Street. . . . a thoughtful HornellHome viewer wrote in to advise us that those buildings are now gone and based on the land mark of the St. Ann's Church steeple, the buildings in that picture would be where the current Salvation
Army/Super Duper/A&P grocery store are located now (and further along Loder
where the strip mall that the Subway Sandwich shop is in)

The  photo on the right is an old aerial view of Hornell pointing out the location of the above "gas storage tank"!

The above photo has been on HornellHome for quite a while in our "Around Hornell in Photos" section. Recently the following question was asked.

If anybody has any information relating to this question please contact us at Hornellhome@aol.com

Do you think we can find anyone who can remember or knows what year this was removed from Union Park?

Not just the statue but the whole thing.  And what happened to it?

I know the statue part is in Hope Cemetery. The Mayor is trying to get Steuben Trust Co. to bring it back into the city and put it on Seneca Street in front of the new bank.

I do not know if the part that held the water was moved or destroyed. I would like to know.
