Betty Jean (VanGorder)
Betty Jean (VanGorder) Lacy, 87, a Hornell native, passed away
peacefully in her sleep (April 29, 2011) in Tracy, CA, at the home of
her granddaughter where she had resided for the past three years.
Betty was born in Hornell
on June 19, 1923, the daughter of Fred and Eva (Bradley) VanGorder.
She was a graduate of Hornell High School, Class of 1941 and Alfred
University, Class of 1945. Following graduation, she joined the
Womenís Army Corps (WAC). Since her discharge in 1946, she has been
a resident of the San Francisco Bay Area in California. She
received her Masterís Degree in Social Welfare from the University
of California @ Berkeley in 1951.
As a Teacher and Social
Worker, Betty devoted her professional life to socially
disadvantaged children and families. She was an activist for equal
rights and justice and published articles in educational magazines
regarding her research on Learning Disabilities. After her
retirement, she and her husband enjoyed many years of traveling the
United States, Mexico and Canada in their motor-home.
She was predeceased by
her husband of 44 years, Samuel Lacy Jr. in 1999; her son, Joji Lacy
in 2000, and her son, Larry Lacy in 2001.
She is survived by her
daughters: Kim Esquer of Stockton, CA, and Laurie Panther of El
Cerrito, CA; her son, Lee Lacy of San Pablo, CA; her
grandchildren: Mario (Patricia) Esquer of Sacramento, CA, Natalie
(Enrique) Acosta of Tracy, CA, Jesse Esquer of Stockton, CA, Cooper
Frye and Campbell Frye of El Cerrito, CA; great-grandchildren,
Selena, Enrique, Jr. (Tracy, CA) and Samuel (Sacramento).
She is also survived by
her sister, Pauline (Joseph) Piccirillo of North Charleston, SC; her
nieces, Linda (Duncan) Hinckley of Chester, VA and Karen Kelly of

be held at the First Unitarian church of Berkeley, CA at a date to
be later announced.
