Henry H. Guenther

(1911 - 2003)






HORNELL - Henry H. Guenther - 92 - of Fawn Hill Drive, Hornell, died early Friday morning (January 17, 2003), following a long illness.

Born in Germany on January 16, 1911, he was the son of B. Henry and Elsa Guenther. He emigrated to Hornell in 1913 with his mother and sister, Helen Guenther Curtis who preceded him in death in 1976. They joined his father in Hornell, who worked at the Merrill Hosiery Company. His father subsequently purchased the company.

Henry was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1928) and after studying at Elmhurst College in Illinois, he succeeded his father as president of the Merrill Hosiery Company. He presided over the Merrill/Guenther Hosiery Company until his retirement in 1979

He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Hornell YMCA, the Hornell Children's Home, the Bethesda Foundation, the Western NY Syrup Corporation and the North Hornell School. He was also affiliated with the Boy Scouts, the Elks Lodge, St. James Mercy Hospital and St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Alfred University bestowed an Honorary Doctorate of Merit upon Henry on October 21, 1992.

He was married in 1938 to the former Agnes Ruth Carrier of Adrian who died in 1981. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Elsa Wechter in 1987.

Surviving are his three sons, David H. (Patience Luedtke) Guenther of Estero, FL, William H. "George" Guenther of Hornell and John H. Guenther of Hornell; his daughter-in-law, Terry Guenther of Arkport; five grandchildren, Kyle Wechter of Denver, CO, Molly Wechter (Scott) Houck of Denver, CO, Elsa Guenther, Kristen Guenther and Katie Guenther, all of Arkport, NY.

Henry's family requests that memorial contributions in his name be made to the Southern Tier Hospice, 751 East Coming Road, Corning NY 14830.
