HORNELL/CANASERAGA - Joyce Elaine (Biddle) Mess, formerly of
Hornell, peacefully went home Friday morning (Jan. 20, 2006), in
Canaseraga and now walks and talks with Jesus. She had fought a
brief but courageous battle with cancer. Joyce was a loving mother,
grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, who really enjoyed
handcrafting, needle work and crocheting. She was a prodigious
creator of Christmas stockings and decorations, which grace many
family homes with ornaments, snowflakes, garlands and crocheted
She was predeceased by her father and mother, Ward and Pauline
Biddle, also of Hornell; her husband of 55 years, Paul Mess, last
year; and her son, David Michael Mess, in 1981. She also was
predeceased by her siblings, brothers Richard and Paul Biddle; and
sisters Phylis Carpenter and Carolyn Weichman.
Surviving are a daughter, Elaine Mess of Arkport; a son, Paul
(Karen) Mess of Canaseraga; three grandchildren, Elizabeth (David)
Giles of Arkport, Jayson (Michelle) Mess of Hornell, and Anthony
(Marianne) Mess of Canaseraga; seven great-grandchildren; brothers,
Charles (Joyce) Biddle of Arkport, and Dana Biddle of Canisteo;
sisters, Kay Marie (James) Wyant of Arkport, and Clio (Rick) Gerbes
of Canisteo; many nieces and nephews; and her special four-legged

There will be no calling hours. Family and friends are invited to a
memorial service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, at the Larger Parish
Church in Canaseraga. Rev. Jesse Flint with officiate. A dinner for
family and friends will follow the service.
