MARY IRENE (GRIFFIN) WHITFORD
HORNELL - Mary I. Whitford, 82, of 34 Davenport St., died Sunday morning (June 6, 2004) at the home of her daughter in Almond, after a long illness.
Born in Hornell on Nov. 26, 1921, she was a daughter of the late John and Irene Jordan Griffin. On Aug. 15, 1940, she was married in St. Ignatius Loyola Rectory to Harry J. Whitford, who predeceased her on Oct. 21, 1993, after 53 years of marriage.
A life-long resident of Hornell, Mary was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1940.
She was employed at the law office of the late Floyd and Lurton Whiteman, for the Erie Railroad Accounting Bureau, for the Steuben County Laboratories in Hornell from 1962 to 1970, and retired in 1988 from the Purchasing Department of Alfred State College.
Mary was a communicant of St. Ann's Church, a member of the Hornell Association, an honorary member of the Hornell High School Alumni Association, having served on the board of directors as well as being the historian. She also served as a Blue Bird and Campfire Leader and was a past president and a member of the board of directors of the Hornell Area Campfire Council.
She loved being with her family and spending time at Waneta Lake.
Her family includes her daughter, Margaret Suzanne (Ronald) Mauro of Almond; her two grandsons, John (Yihong) Mauro of Painted Post and Daniel Mauro of Almond; her sister, Jeanne DeGaetano of Hornell; her two special nieces, Lynda (Dennis) O'Brien and Cynthia Schumaker, all of Hornell; her special great-niece and nephew, Bridget O'Brien and Matthew Schumaker.
Besides her parents and husband, Mary was predeceased by her infant son, Harry John Whitford; and her brother-in-law, Matthew DeGaetano.
