JEAN CATHERINE O'CONNOR LIEB

 

HORNELL - Jean Catherine O'Connor Lieb, 78, of 111 Chaddock Ave., Hornell, died Wednesday morning (March 16, 2005) at St. James Mercy Hospital, following a brief illness.

She was born Oct. 28, 1926, to Helen (Haggerty) and Anthony A. O'Connor at West Side Hospital in Scranton, Pa.

Jean resided for a time in Owego, where she attended St. Patrick's School. She had resided in Hornell since the age of 17. Jean was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1944) and later attended Marywood College in Scranton, Pa.

From 1947-1956, Jean was employed in the bookkeeping and payroll department of the New York State Department of Public Works. She was a communicant of St. Ann's Church and a member of the St. James Women's Auxiliary. For 45 years, she served as an election inspector for the city of Hornell.

Jean served as president of the Hornell PTA and was one of the founders of the Washington School PTA. She was a member of the Woman's Democratic Committee, the Hornell Association, the Hornell American Legion Women's Auxiliary and a member of the 1944 Alumni Group. She was also an avid bingo player.

Jean was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas O'Connor; and two sisters, Ann O'Connor and Maureen King.

She was married Oct. 18, 1949, to Harold Lieb, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Barbara (Alexander) Kowtun of Hornell and Margaret (John) Frungillo of Hornell; three sons, Robert Lieb of Hornell, John (Elizabeth) Lieb of Hornell and James (Mary) Lieb of Albany; two sisters, Helen (Burton) Corbett of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Marguerite (Francis) Mauro of Hornell; one brother, Patrick O'Connor of Jamestown; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; two very special sisters-in-law, Barbara O'Connor and Barbara Ketchum; two brothers-in-law, Joseph King and Willard Ketchum; many special nieces, nephews and cousins; and many dear friends.

Burial will be in the VA Cemetery, Bath.
