Edna A. (Bash) Kohnke

NORHORNELL, NY  -  LEESBURG, FL - Edna A. Kohnke - 83 - of Leesburg, FL, formerly of Hornell, died unexpectedly on January 27, 2007 in Leesburg, FL, following a brief illness.


Born in Marion, OH, on July 25, 1923, she ws the daughter of Jacob & Hazel (Haffner) Bash.

Edna grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (Class of 1941). In her youth, she was a gifted swimmer & diver and had served as a lifeguard at Camp I-Wa-Su (now Camp Rathburn). She enjoyed athletics, especially playing basketball and cheerleading.

On February 15, 1947, she married John "Jack" Kohnke who survives. Throughout the years, they lived in several locations, including Walton, NY, Liverpool, NY, Minnetonka, MN, Snellville, GA, and have lived in Leesburg, FL, for the past 4 1/2 years. She was an active volunteer and especially enjoyed working at thrift shops at various churches.

Edna was preceded in death by her daughter, Martha Kendall, and her brother, Emmett Bash.

In addition to her husband, Jack, survivors include 4 daughters, Pat Wisneski, Mary Ann McIntyre, Karen Kohnke, and Kristen Kohnke; 3 sons, Bob Kohnke, John Kohnke, and James Kohnke; 1 brother, Dr. Jerry Bash of Towson, MD; 2 sisters, Dorothy Sayles of Leesburg, FL, and Mary Louise "Peg" Hover of Hornell; 13 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

A Memorial Service was held on February 2, 2007, in Leesburg, FL.

A second service was held in Hornell with local arrangements made by the Dagon Funeral Home.
