HORNELL - James N. “Jim” Psyhos, 54, of 83 East Washington St., Hornell, formerly of Coudersport, Pa., died Sunday afternoon (Oct. 30, 2005) at Rochester General Hospital, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on Aug. 3, 1951, he was the son of George and Georgia (Scarmoutsos) Psyhos.

Jim was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1969) and had served in the US Navy during the Vietnam era. He later graduated from Elim Bible School in Lima. He resided for about 10 years in Rochester and for about 12 years lived in Coudersport, Pa.

He was employed as a portrait photographer for Varden Studios of Rochester for about 10 years and was responsible for taking many of the high school and college class photos, including the graduating officers at Annapolis Naval Academy. Jim also was self-employed as a “free lance” photographer for many years. Throughout the years, he served as a missionary in several locations, including Mexico, Scotland and California. Most recently, he served as supervisor of customer support for Adelphia Communications in Coudersport, Pa.

Jim was a self-taught musician, playing the guitar and piano. He had been a member of the “Beth and the Full Moon Band” for several years.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Psyhos, who died May 2, 2000.


Surviving are his mother, Georgia Psyhos of Hornell; one sister, Elaine Sortore of Hornell; two brothers, Manuel Psyhos of Webster and Peter (Kathy) Psyhos-Burns of Lexington, Mass.; two nieces, Laura Sortore and Shayna Sortore; one nephew, John Burns; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family of James N. “Jim” Psyhos will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, with Fr. Patrick Cowles of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit in Rochester officiating. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery, Hornell.

Jim's family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name be made to the Hornell City Ambulance, Broadway, Hornell, NY 14843. Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.
