WEST ELMIRA  -  A long time resident of West Elmira passed away Thursday, December 14, 2006 at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center after declining health with his family by his side.

Born on September 18, 1937 in Hornell, NY, Mike was the son of Lawrence & Bernice Preston McCarthy. He married Doris Francisco on August 20, 1960 in Hornell. Together they raised a close and loving family. "His beloved wife's Garden was his oasis".

 Mike was employed by Robinson Lumber in the paint department for many years. He was a United States Marine field bugler who always remained patriotic to his country. Instrumental in local youth, Mike was very active in the Boy Scouts of America for many years. In serving the Lord, he was active in the "Promise Keepers" and the A.C.T.S. Group.

Surviving is his loving family who cherish his memory, his wife, companion and best friend, Doris Francisco McCarthy; their children, Ann Michele McCarthy, NYC; Kathleen Rose (Robert) Hansen, Horseheads; Michael Edward (Katelyn) Murphy-McCarthy, Norcross, GA; four grandchildren, Kevin, Jeffrey and Julie Hansen, Aiden Murphy-McCarthy; a brother, Lawrence (JoAnn) McCarthy, Hornell; many nieces and nephews and many cherished family friends along with his canine companion, "Frisco". Mike was predeceased by his two brothers and three sisters.

Family and friends will be received at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens, 1126 Broadway, Southport, on Sunday, December 17, 2006 between the hours of 2-5 p.m. Funeral services will take place at Caywoods on Monday morning 10 a.m. with the Reverend William Vallet officiating, followed by graveside services in Woodlawn Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded Mr. McCarthy.

Memorials donations may be directed to the Boy Scouts of America Scholarship Fund which will be set up in Mike’s memory. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.

Mikes family would like to thank Dr. Muse along with his staff for the friendship and care provided throughout his illness as well as the many friends and neighbors both here and in the Philippines.
